Abstract
Drawing, in the post settlement context of colonial Australia, was used to describe the 'other', for an audience far distant from Australia. It took until the dawn of the twentieth century for the residents of the newly federated nation to be recognised their place of residence as 'home'. This paper discusses the development of the concept of home by drawing a link between the drawing and design, in 1913, of the Australian capital Canberra, and their environmental and social impact on future generations of artists who came to call the planned city 'home'.
