Abstract
For the past few hundred years monarchy and democracy have been representatives of what might be described as Weberian rationalisation and Herdian resistance. This means it is all the more important for historians to understand monarchy and democracy as political systems that affect the historical models that often, without reflection, we work with every day in our thinking and writing.
