Abstract

This special collection of articles, ‘The Aesthetics and Politics of Contemporary Cultural Production in Morocco’, is based on the papers delivered at a successful international conference organised at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, on 21 March 2014. The papers that came out of that conference explore the role played by contemporary Moroccan literature, cinema and popular culture–among other genres of cultural production–in revealing the complex social and political tensions in a society aspiring to freedom. This special issue is unique in its attempt to study contemporary multilingual Moroccan cultural products in Arabic Fusha, Darija, Amazigh and French and their role in transforming the nature of the connection between the cultural sphere and the exercise of power.
