    Abstract

Education features strongly in imaginations of transitions to modernity in contemporary Indonesia.Education separated the village-born men from the world of their parents and developed in them a modern sensibility of self-fashioning, where achievement (prestasi) is validated through the moral frameworks of modern institutions rather than historical frameworks of kinship, piety, and self-reliant livelihoods.
