Abstract
Heads, by John Forrester Clack offers us portraits that appear free from a literal interpretation of human features yet the works appear charged with an overwhelming and dynamic sense of emotion. The exhibition is a combination of oil paintings and charcoals, where the medium itself takes a leading role rather than acting simply as an expressive tool. Thick, voluptuous paint is energetically manipulated by Clack to create imagery that emerges from the surface. Not only do Clacks works blur the boundary between painting and sculpture, his poignant portraits also give the viewer a sense of the tightrope between agony and ecstasy.
