    Abstract

The enhanced gas-solid reaction was discussed after extended milling. Hydrogen reduction of lunar ilmenite was shown to be rapid with little reduction at 1000°C beyond 10 minutes and synthetic ilmenite was slower with the reaction complete in 20 minutes. Thermal reduction using hydrogen and sulphur was also reported. The surface area of the as-milled powders was determined by a multipoint BET technique and was found to be 10.0 and 9.5 m2g-1 for the unmilled and 400 h milled powders respectively.
