    Abstract

This presentation will explore the connection between the Giving Voice to Values (GVV) approach to teaching ethics (which emphasises the development of skills for acting in accordance with ones values) and Self Determination Theory (SDT). Krieger argues that each of the psychological requirements for a satisfying life (autonomy, competence, and relatedness to others) bear close, apparently causal, relationships to ethical and professional behaviour by lawyers. Significantly autonomy is measured by a persons sense of freedom to make choices they prefer, and the extent to which their choices reflect their true selves and their true values and interests.
