Abstract

This chapter draws together the main themes of the volume. It argues that Roman emperors have functioned (and continue to function) not only as models of kingship, but as a way of structuring the past, present, and future of states and individuals and of expressing the relationships between them. The ideas of contingency, collection, and curation that lie behind these phenomena are summed up by the concept of representation. We argue that representation is a process which arises from the interaction of human imagination with specific media, genres, and discourses.
