    Abstract

Australia is a country with high levels of migration, over one-quarter of the population are born overseas and over half of the population have at least one parent born overseas. The ethnic composition of immigrants has changed from mostly European to be more diverse and highly Asian. This chapter explores relationship formation in Australia in this context by looking at intermarriage and the partnership formation of recent immigrants. Using marriage registration data to explore the patterns of intermarriage for people born in different regions highlights the unique experience of intermarriage for people born in different cultural contexts. Using data on the experience of immigrants in Australia adds the constraints of the migration policy setting. It highlights the impact of gender and culture in shaping marriage in Australian society.
