Abstract

The Philippines is a nation of some 7, 000 islands, 83 million people (in mid2001) and 168 ‘living languages’.2 The principal lines of ethnic cleavage were created more by colonial policies, particularly those of the Spanish administration, than by primordial ethnic attachments.
