Abstract
This chapter first shows the role of anthropology in the development of refugee and forced migration studies. In the early stages, it provided a cornerstone
for the establishment of the field of research, but in the meantime other disciplines have become stronger. In a second step we make visible why in the German-speaking world, anthropology has not yet played a central role in refugee research. In the third part of the chapter
we present key topics of anthropological refugee research. In the fourth
and final part, we focus on two debates that keep resurfacing in the anthropology of displacement – the meaningfulness of distinguishing refugee research from other fields of research and the role of applied anthropology.
