Evaluating Southeast Asian responses to China's rise: The vital context of managing great power resurgence

Over the past 25 years, Southeast Asian states have arguably thought and done more in response to the growth of Chinese power than any other country. However, these achievements are tempered by structural and ideational limitations. This chapter suggests that the fundamental problem with Southeast Asian strategies for managing China's growth is the lack of recognition that both post-Cold War East Asia has faced the parallel resurgence of both China and the United States, not just the rise of China.
