    Abstract

The generation and characterization of Gaussian continuous-variable entanglement between the amplitude and phase quadratures of a pair of light beams was reported. The strength of the entanglement in the spirit of the Schrödinger picture was gauged by measuring the degree of inseparability. Qualitative differences between the behavior of the degree of inseparability and the degree of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) paradox were demonstrated by the introduction of controlled loss to each entangled beam. The entanglement was represented on a photon number diagram that provided an intuitive and physically relevant description of the state.
