Experimental determination of the lifetimes of the 2(-1,0) n0 '2pnd'(1P°) doubly excited states of helium by detection of VUV fluorescence

    Abstract

    We report measurements of the lifetimes of the 2(-1,0) n0 '2pnd'(1p°) doubly excited states of helium with principal quantum number n ranging from 3 to 9. Our results are obtained using time-resolved single-photon detection of the VUV fluorescence emitted when the states decay following resonant excitation using VUV photons from a synchrotron light source beamline, and are compared with recent theoretical calculations.
