Abstract
This essay won the 2021 Calibre Essay Prize. The essay describes the political and economic decline of Lebanon in 2019-2020, culminating with the gigantic Beirut port explosion of August 2020. The author, Theodore Ell, and his diplomat wife were directly affected by the explosion, but survived. The essay charts the gradual erosion of the author's "outsider status" in a country he prefers only to observe, but which involves him in its pain and conflict nonetheless.
