Abstract
This essay won the 2021 Calibre Essay Prize, a prestigious international literary award administered by the Australian Book Review magazine (Melbourne, VIC). The essay is a political analysis and personal memoir of the Beirut port explosion of 4 August 2020, in which the author, Theodore Ell, lost his home and was nearly killed. The essay analyses the origins of the explosion in the corruption of the Lebanese political system and includes first-hand reportage of the Beirut port explosion.
