Abstract
This Chapter discusses the medical, psychological and social sequelae of sexual violence within the context of a clinical forensic medical response. Although definitions of sexual violence vary between jurisdictions, a standardized approach to medical care and forensic evidence collection apply to many jurisdictions. Addressing medical needs always take priority over forensic evidence collection. The nature of physical violence in sexual assault cases varies, but there are common patterns of injury which can be described. There are also limitations of findings with various explanations detailed in this chapter. Substances including alcohol may affect the history and findings following sexual assault and rape. Other medical consequences of sexual violence include the acquisition of sexually transmissible infections, resultant pregnancy and psychological distress.
