    Abstract

New analysis of hole burning and magnetic circular dichroism observations on the fine structure of the excited 3E state in the nitrogen-vacancy centre of diamond finds that the effective spin-orbit contribution is much smaller than previously estimated. This situation means that the spin-spin interaction determines the fine structure in centres with strain splittings >0.5 cm-1. It is discussed that this result is more consistent with the observed weak strain dependence of hole-burning features than earlier calculations and supports the six electron model of the centre.
