    Abstract

In 2015 there were over 100,000 learners of German in Australia. While the figures for universities have been almost unchanged, the figures for the school sector show a slight upward trend. What motivates these learners to learn the German language and what the implications are for the promotion of German in Australia is the focus of this chapter. The discussion links the Australian situation to research in L2 motivation in general and includes references to language policy.
