    Abstract

The environment is literally all around us. Yet it is also something that has been re-conceived in the changing context of the globalizing, fossil-fuel driven twentieth century. Environment acquired a the in the 1940s: it became something to be managed, and by the 1960s, its special experts began to call themselves environmental scientists. The environment and the global were twin imaginings of the 1940s, with global financial markets and the institutions of the United Nations providing the context for the new environmental management.
