Abstract
The last decade has bee n marked in secular Europe by an important return of debates on religion, especially on Is lam and its compatibility with mainland European societies. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the American -led 'war on terror' and after the Madrid (March 2004) and London bombings (July 200 5), one can clearly see the change of discourse from that of 'race' (or ethnicity) to that of religion. In other words, even though racism on the basis of 'race ' is still prevalent, markers of difference have taken on a more religion -cultural nature, especially with the increase of Islamophobia.
