    Abstract

    The topic of political exile from and within the Indonesian archipelago under the United Dutch East India Company (VOC) remains understudied. Especially limited is our understanding of exile to territories outside the Indies yet under VOC control during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, among them Ceylon. Dutch archives in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and South Africa contain detailed lists of those exiled and their retinues, comments on why particular individuals were sent away, the names of the ships that carried them, and the monthly allowances of rice and cash provided in new settings.
