    Abstract

We analyse a possibility of gain-induced compensation of losses in 1D infinite layered structure, consisting of alternating metal and dielectric layers with gain. Using isofrequency contours technique we show that losses can be completely compensated for a certain value of the longitudinal component of wavevector and partially reduced for others. In the canalization regime, when the isofrequency contours are close to straight lines, compensation is achieved for a wider spatial spectrum, improving a subwavelength imaging capability.
