Abstract
New notions of amenability and contractability are introduced. Examples are given to show that for most of the new notions, the corresponding class of Banach algebras is larger than that for the classical amenable algebras introduced by Johnson. General theory is developed for these notions, and studied for several concrete classes of Banach algebras; special consideration is given to Banach algebras defined on locally compact groups.
