Abstract
This book explored recent developments in the study of racism. My contributions to the book are one sole‐authored and two joint‐authored chapters. My chapter “Globalized Racism” (pp. 69‐91) provides a comparative analysis of the structures of racist discourse in Western Europe, Australia and Japan, and looks at the development of ideas on anti‐racist education in those countries. The chapter “Migrants and Indigenous People in World History”, co‐authored with Yi Hodok (pp. 93‐ 125) looks at the impact of colonial history on the emergence of racial and racist thought in the context of the British and Japanese empires. The chapter “The New Racism and Japan”, co‐authored with Ukai Satoshi, Sakai Naoki and Yi Hodok (pp. 207‐264) examines the way in which historical factors including nationality policy and colonial expansion have influenced contemporary problems of racism in Japan, and places these problems in the context of recent theories on racism and multiculturalism.
