Abstract
Recently, the Federal Government has discussed at length the merits of deployment of nuclear power in Australia. In a research context, this has lead to Australian participation in Generation IV nuclear fission reactor development. The goals of Generation IV are to improve nuclear safety, improve proliferation resistance, minimise waste and natural resource utilisation, and decrease the cost to build and run such plants. Generation IV reactors are all based on the fission of uranium or transuranic elements. There is, however, an alternative nuclear power generation technology that will approach maturity on a similar time scale to Generation IV.
