Abstract
Widely described as the greatest maritime tragedy in Australian history, the fate of the Montevideo Maru was not an unusual one for ships in World War II. Its sinking was one of many such incidents. Prisoners from all sides of the conflict were killed when being transported by sea as a direct result of the unrestricted submarine warfare that was waged as part of the total war that characterised the conflict.
