Abstract
Our national political leaders are staking a lot in this election year on the idea that our health-care system requires reform, but does it? Consider how well our system has performed against international benchmarks. The latest statistics from the World Health Organisation rank Australia as having the fifth-highest, health-adjusted life expectancy at birth, out of 194 countries. Yet we are ranked as having only the 33rd highest proportion of our GDP spent on health.
