    Abstract

The Indian Ocean covers one fifth of the worlds surface area and abuts Australia, Asia, Africa and Antarctica giving it unique world-wide influence. Significantly, weather patterns in the ocean have long played a pivotal role in the historical development of countries across its littoral region. The seasonal monsoons, for example, typically associated with the Indian Ocean, greatly influenced early navigators and traders in their travels as well as those who invaded and conquered countries of the region.
