    Abstract

Sideways career moves are one way to deal with academia’s contingencies. One ‘adjacent possible’ career in the academy is learning and teaching development, a field dominated by women and often positioned as caring work. Academics who make a study of academia tend to gravitate to these roles as they offer teaching opportunities, but learning and teaching development can be a career trap.
