Abstract
Our alliance with America is facing a big test. Australia's support in Iraq now attracts less attention in Washington than our growing political alignment with China, and President George Bush's team is wondering what to do about it. Prime Minister John Howard's recent landmark Lowy Institute speech will have reinforced their concerns. It was scrupulously even-handed between the US and China on litmus issues such as Taiwan. That looks to Washington as though we have moved a long way out of the US camp and into China's.
