"I am walking backwards into China": Identity Recovery and the Return of Shirley Lim Geok-lin

Abstract

Searching "China" in her hometown Malacca and her then residing place Hong Kong, Shirley Lim Geok-lin understands that this pursuit inevitably brings about an imperialist desire. Her guilty "return" to the Chinese culture only reveals to her that the imaginary China is no longer there, as the reality she experiences in real "China" does not tally with the one in Malacca.
