Abstract
A preliminary study was conducted to assess the impact perforation resistance of a thermoplastic based fiber-metal laminate (FML) and, through comparison with published results for thermoset based FMLs, benchmark its impact performance. Comparison was also made with results from perforated aluminum specimens. The effect of impactor geometry was also investigated. Overall, the results show that a number of fracture mechanisms contribute to impact energy absorption in the FML, in addition to fracture of the thin aluminum layers.
