    Abstract

One of the luxuries of being an academic is the freedom to step back from the fray of partisan politics to dream a bit about how the world should be, not how it actually is, mired in the muck of daily events. In some ways this is the only way to cope with the seemingly intractable mess that is contemporary Brazilian politics. The most recent episode in a saga now being dramatised for a Netflix series was the Sunday 17 April vote by the Chamber of Deputies to impeach President Dilma Rousseff. While there is ample background reporting available in the international media, a recap does help explain why the situation in Brazil seems so hopeless.
