    Abstract

The status of the Brazilian AMS program and the improvements at the São Paulo 8 UD Pelletron Accelerator, required for the implementation of this technique are reported. The performance of a Bragg curve type detector, designed and built to be used for AMS purposes is also reported. The AMS was used for the determination of radiocarbon ages of charcoal soil samples from the Amazon region, giving rise to evidences of occurrence of Holocene fires in this region.
