Abstract

The application of the microgrooved passivated emitter solar cell ( mu g PESC) structure to both the concentrator cells and high-resistivity substrates are described. Also described are improved results obtained with an innovative laser-grooved, buried approach, which has the potential for producing high efficiency cells at low cost. The results reported include the demonstration of 25% energy conversion efficiency under concentrated sunlight, the demonstration of 20-22% efficiency for p-type substrate resistivities over the range from 0. 1 to 2000 OMEGA cm, and the demonstration of 19% efficiency in large-area CZ substrates using the laser-grooved approach.
