T1 - Improving Type Ia supernovae as distance indicators

N2 - We seek to investigate the rest-frame near-IR properties of a unique sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that is being generated by two wide field transient surveys: the Palomar Transient Factory and SkyMapper. Unlike previous low-redshift samples, the new sample will be complete, volume limited and negligibly affected by peculiar velocities of the host galaxies. By extending the wavelength baseline to the near-IR, we will be able to disentangle the competing effects of intrinsic colour variation and host galaxy extinction, one of the last astrophysical hurdles to improving the use of SNe Ia in the study of dark energy. Furthermore, we plan to provide the definitive measurement of the intrinsic dispersions of SNe Ia in the J and H bands. Our unique sample will have continuous photometric/spectroscopic coverage, providing a legacy for both cosmological use of SNe and understanding the physics of their explosions. In this proposal, we ask for time to continue our successful program, which was started in 2010A and has to date obtained data for 10 SNe Ia. We also ask for time to obtain reference images for seven of the ten supernova that can be observed during 2011A.
