Abstract

The inhabitants of central Java are a transitional society, in both a social and a demographic sense. Although children undertake various types of activities of economic benefit to the family, their value varies according to social class. With a change in social values and in the roles of children, the supports for high fertility are being eroded. -Paul Compton
