    Abstract

    This English coursebook is designed for all the undergraduate freshmen from foreign language majors and English-major sophomores within foreign language settings. It focuses on aspects of the society and culture of the United Kingdom and the United States of America from the ancient period down to the present. It covers a wide range of topics in assisting us to reconsider the roles of Britain and America within the Western community or beyond. These topics include geography, language, history, government, legal system, economy, education, technology and popular culture of the two nations, as well as of the philosophical traditions that have shaped much of western thoughts, including that of the United Kingdom and the United States of America. An additional online course (SPOC) will emphasize knowledge acquisition through independent study and peer interaction.
