Abstract

This introductory chapter presents historic examples of student protests to discuss the political activism of students in Northeast and Southeast Asia. Since World War II, students have become the vanguard of social movements, from the period when Chinese students fought for freedom in Tiananmen Square, to when Indonesian youth activists celebrated the downfall of the Soeharto dictatorship. However, despite the visibility of student protests in Asia, only few theoretical and comparative studies have been conducted to determine the impacts of student activism.
