    Abstract

Investigating the visual as a transformative pedagogy in the Asia Region surveys perspectives from a number of academics in the greater Asian region, including co- authorship of the opening chapter, Emerging Asian Paradigms - Visual Pedagogy, Culture and Technology. This chapter includes a discussion of the Digital Bamboo research project, offered as an example of the transformative potential of Art and Design led education models which both engage and critique the effects of emerging digital technologies on traditional education methods, arts practices, vocational potential and cultural challenges present in the rapidly evolving Asian region. The book offers a contextual discourse on the forces shaping contemporary visual pedagogy in the Asian Region, discussing significant transformative drivers influencing recent shifts in visual art and design practice and education. It surveys a diverse and expansive range of innovative, educational and research initiatives by scholars working across the fields of art, education and design, identifying key socio cultural themes that frame research, their associated theoretical positions and practices. Voices in the book articulate vivid histories through the lens of visual culture, policy developments influencing and shaping curriculum and evolutions in the cultural industries, and new methodologies for innovative outreach programs.
