Abstract
In this essay the use of scientific bibliography and consultation with scientists when writing hard science fiction is explored. The essay presents three case studies. In the first one, the use of neurological scientific literature is exemplified with the background research needed to create the short story El año del gorilla sapiens. In the second one, the consultation with practicing biologists is used to guide the search for writing about exoplanet terraforming in the novel Piratas genéticos. In the third one, the terminology of airport control towers was consulted with practitioners and plane engineers to construct the dialogs in the short story La coordenada incorrecta. The essay concludes with a reflection on the potential use of technology and science MOOCs by science fiction writers.
