    Abstract

This paper explores the multi-level aspects of cultural competence from the perspectives of healthcare service providers in the community health context. Qualitative interviews were conducted with staff (n=14) from a community health service in Australia. Findings showed that most participants had an adequate understanding of cultural competence and viewed it as an important aspect of their work. In general, participants aimed to take a client-centred approach rather than trying to achieve cultural expertise. Difficulties with language, communication and organizational processes were identified as potential barriers to service provision. This study furthers the understanding of the challenges of culturally competent practice.
