Abstract
The public debate on autonomous weapon systems - guided by artificial intelligence (AI) - is often framed by Hollywood's apocalyptic image of gun-toting machines turning on the humans who developed them. And with global experts such as Professor Stephen Hawking now calling for a ban on "killer robots", the issue is again making headlines. While AI and the development of autonomous weapon systems will have a significant impact on the future of warfare, we need to avoid wild speculation and consider their development in a much broader context of the contemporary security environment and battlefield needs
