Abstract

This chapter is divided into two main sections. The first section lays out the essential features of the republican way of thinking about freedom, setting it in contrast to Bentham's view. The second shows how coercive laws might not represent an assault on freedom. The chapter concludes by addressing the issue of why the debate is important and why the republican viewpoint is appealing.
