Abstract
Gymnobelideus leadbeateri was considered extinct early this century but rediscovered in 1961 within a small 100 km × 100 km area of the Central Highlands of Victoria. This habitat is now under threat from timber extraction. The population, already small, could decline by >90% if the loss of suitable nesting hollows caused by current extraction techniques continues. The ecology of the animal is discussed and its conservation needs outlined. -L.Wright
