    Abstract

This is a study of one learner’s acquisition of the speech act of leavetaking in social conversations in Indonesian, over a three-month period.1 Its main purpose is to identify the stages by which he developed the ability to take leave; a secondary aim is to identify key factors that influenced his learning. This will add to the scant body of research on how pragmatic ability is acquired in a second language.
