Abstract
We examine Zn substitution for Cu within the (Formula presented) planes of the cuprate superconductors by discussing the formation of local moments on and near impurity sites and the modification of the transverse-spin susceptibility in the antiferromagnetic state. We suggest that Zn does not necessarily act as a divalent substitution, rather its valency is determined by the surrounding correlated medium. We study this hypothesis by analyzing the effect of static impurities inducing diagonal disorder within a one-band Hubbard model coupled to a localized state representing the Zn (Formula presented) orbital.
