    Abstract

In formal education, the basic teaching and learning setting is the classroom. Everyday instructional activities take place inside the classroom. A classroom is a place not unlike the natural ecological environment in which organisms big and small inhabit and share the resources that sustain their survival and nurture their growth. Like the natural environment, a classroom is dynamic: it changes and adapts, and it manages the basic functional needs of teaching and learning within a structured setting. Frequently occurring issues in the teaching and learning process should be taken up in systematic studies aiming for practical solutions. Just as no two ecological systems are exactly the same, classrooms also vary, often greatly. Understanding how second languages are learned from a theoretical perspective would benefit the frontline teachers in many ways.
