Abstract
I do not mean to suggest that debt and land dispossession are solely responsible for the repeated incidents of Uyghur-Han violence in South Xinjiang and the on-going interethnic tensions in the region. Restrictions on certain Uyghur religious, cultural, and educational practices appear, from reports since 2009, to be of at least equal importance in this respect. Nevertheless, land dispossession clearly also plays a significant role in catalyzing Uyghur protest in South Xinjiang, and Uyghur protest has led in many of the reported cases since July 2009 to interethnic violence.
